Today is International Sex Workers’ Rights Day. We use this opportunity to emphasize the need to recognize our human rights as we fight violence and oppression against us as sex workers. This day reminds us that we are part of a global community of people who refuse to accept discrimination and stigmatisation of our work. We appreciate the support we have received over the years from individuals, organisations and other marginalised communities and we continue to fight for our human rights.
Today Star – The first collective of sex workers in the Balkans celebrates it with a podcast where Monica, a sex worker from our community speaks. She talks loudly about why this day is celebrated, what it means, what rights of sex workers are most often violated, how different would her job be if sex work is decriminalised in our country, what problems she faces mostly, how much her life has changed after she unveiled the mask and spoke publicly about her profession? On these and many other questions through a spontaneous conversation Monica speaks openly during the podcast which you can listen to at the link below.
For the feminist platform Medusa, Lila Milic, coordinator for mobilisation, education and prevention in our organisation, wrote an article on “Why do sex workers celebrate 3rd of March?” which talks about sex workers ‘rights, the benefits of decriminalisation and respect for sex workers’ labour rights, and how you can support us.
Additionally, we created a promotional material in form of leaflets, which will be shared with the community through our regional coordinators. The leaflets contain information on the basic rights of sex workers and how to seek protection if needed.
