Living Library with Sex Workers

On June 2nd we celebrate the International Sex Workers’ Day, in honor of sex workers worldwide and the efforts to recognize sex work as legitimate labor and profession. This day is considered to be a symbolic birth of the activist movement of sex workers in the struggle to protect our fundamental human rights.

In the light of this significant day for sex workers, we are commencing the “Sex Workers Month” campaign, within the frames of which we organize public events in three cities in North Macedonia:

  • “Living Library with Sex Workers” in Strumitsa on June 9th 2023 (Friday) in the European House – Strumitsa;
  • “Living Library with Sex Workers” in Gostivar on June 16th 2023 (Friday), in the Civic Resource Center Gostivar, and
  • “Living Library with Sex Workers” in Skopje on June 23rd (Friday), in the European House – Skopje.

The purpose behind the “Living Library with Sex Workers” events is to sensitize the broader public regarding sex workers rights, organized according to the “living library” concept, which enables interaction among people as a tool to overcome the prejudices and stereotypes in a safe public space. At the events, visitors from the general population will have the opportunity to hear out sex workers’ personal stories and ask questions about their experiences.

This time around, we are opening the issue of the importance of recognizing sex workers’ rights in our society in a different manner, as well as recognizing sex work just like any other work. By applying the living library concept, we will break down the stigma and prejudices. The event is open for the public and the attendance is free of charge. All you need to do is spare two hours of your time, pay us a visit, so we can talk and you can hear our life stories.

If you wish to attend the event, please confirm your attendance by filling out the form at the following LINK, by which you will have obtained more detailed information about the event.

The event is organized within the frames of the project titled “Empowered Sex Workers against Discrimination” which aims to strengthen the response that promotes and develops the principles of non-discrimination and equality of sex workers’ human rights.  The project is implemented within the frames of the “Anti-Discrimination Commission Performs Its Preventative and Protective Role” program, conducted by the Macedonian Center for International Cooperation (MCIC), and financed by the European Union.
