Don’t outlaw sex workers’ consent! – European Sex Workers Rights Alliance’s Petition

The European Sex Workers’ Rights Alliance (ESWA) has conducted a petition – Don’t outlaw sex workers’ consent! against Spain’s attempts to criminalize sex work.

The Spanish government wants to outlaw sex workers’ consent, and criminalise sex work! This would take the country back to Franquist times, when working premises around sex work were criminalised under the “tercera locativa”, a figure from 1973 that the “most progressive” Government of Spain, wants to revive.

The criminalisation of sex work is widely opposed by anti-trafficking organisations such as La Strada International, the European NGO Platform against human trafficking and the Global Alliance Against Trafficking in Women. Criminalisation of sex work pushes sex workers underground, which leads to them working in hard and dangerous conditions. Today’s Spain is in a better place when it comes to awareness around sexual consent. We believe that every human being has a right to say Yes or No when it comes to sex.

We demand that the government of Spain will withdraw from any attempts to criminalise sex work and will not act against sex workers’ well-being.
