Since the beginning of the HIV epidemic in the 1980s, sex workers have been among the populations most affected by HIV. In many of the European and Central Asian countries, HIV prevalence among sex workers of all genders is reported to be considerably higher than in the general population, despite their significant involvement in HIV-protective behaviours.
Sex workers’ vulnerability to HIV infection results from a range of factors, including not only the type of work in which sex workers engage but foremost criminalisation of sex work and other forms of legal oppression faced by sex workers, discrimination, violence, social marginalisation and other human rights violations. Moreover, in many contexts sex workers have limited access to affordable, quality healthcare services, reliable education on occupational health and safety, and evidence-based HIV prevention programmes tailored to their needs and expectations.

The International Committee on the Rights of Sex Workers in Europe has developed this online training in order to adequately address health needs and concerns of sex workers in the European region, provide them with knowledge on HIV, STIs and other health concerns, identify barriers which compromise to sex workers’ health and safety and contribute to their vulnerability to HIV, and strategies in challenging these barriers.
